西藏發生二十年來最嚴重的反中抗暴事件，重挫中國力圖在北京奧運前營造舉國團結和諧形象的努力。除國際人權團體群起撻伐外，多年來支持西藏獨立的好萊塢巨星李察吉爾呼籲世人，中國若處理藏人抗議失當，北京奧運會應該受到抵制。

西藏為紀念抗暴四十九週年的活動，十四日因中國軍警鎮壓僧侶，演變成暴力衝突。據新華社報導，有十名平民在暴亂中被火燒死。
不過，在印度達蘭薩拉的西藏流亡政府確認已有超過三十人死亡，未經證實的死亡人數則超過百人。西藏流亡政府並呼籲聯合國介入，終止中國在西藏「嚴重侵犯人權行為」。
